Hurricane Dorian and the Distraction of Sharpie-gate

Once again Donald Trump is covering up his latest gaffe, where he said Alabama would be hit by Hurricane Dorian…

Just for a fact check, here were the current projections from the DAY BEFORE he made the tweet above:

Alabama is NOT in the line of fire…

Great… So while he’s busy covering his ass by focusing on Alabama, the rest of the country is focusing on the devastation in the Bahamas and the Carolinas.

I had hoped this wouldn’t be typical of President Trump’s US disaster response after the poor way he reacted to Hurricane Maria by fighting and arguing with Puerto Rico’s officials in a Twitter war, but hey: I’m man enough to admit that I was obviously wrong.

Look, I honestly couldn’t give two shits about whether this started as a mistake: he probably meant “Atlanta” originally, and made a slip of the tongue. Happens to the best of us. If he admitted it and moved on, I wouldn’t have a problem with that.

Notice the area of this photo that I highlighted: the area of impact was hand drawn with a Sharpie, and contained forecast models that were a week out of date…

The problem I have is that this manufactured “crisis” is taking up as much time as the actual crisis we are facing right now, and Trump’s ego is not allowing him to let some minor mistake go so we can move on to more important things: In addition to a NOAA map showing projected models FROM A WEEK AGO which was lazily modified by sharpie, Trump actually had our Homeland Security Counterterrorism advisor, draft a statement about the hurricane and Alabama today.

A. This is a counterterrorism expert, not a meteorologist…

B. Like our government officials don’t have more immediate threats to deal with?

C. I’m willing to bet that there are people who may be convinced this storm will still hit Alabama because Trump is sending mixed signals in his disaster response, and he has his Republican base brainwashed that anyone saying anything that disagrees with him is “Fake News”… (I can’t be the only one who recognizes the danger of that…?)

So I ask: why is Trump wasting time on this? HIS OWN REFUSAL TO LET IT GO is why everyone else is now wasting time on this story too… and THAT only marginalizes the very real devastation that people in the Bahamas and the Carolinas are experiencing because of Hurricane Dorian (30 dead and HUNDREDS of people missing as of right now).

Side note: this meme in response to “Sharpie-gate” was too good NOT to share:
